Planters

PLANTING AROUND THE VILLAGE

APRIL 2019

The Planters at the bottom of Church Way (photos above) have finally been planted up with permanent plants, which hopefully after their first year will need little maintenance.
For those who would like to know, the central plant is a photinia, Pink Crispy, with two different types of euonymus planted around them, one the usual everyday one, silver queen, we think, and the other a small leaved variegated type, harlequin, grown from cuttings.
Around the edge are prostrate rosemary plants, which in time should drape over the edges of the planters, and ornamental black grass in between. The crocus will be left in to flower again next year, but the pansies and violas will come out as they go over. Then hopefully the marigolds planted last year will have seeded themselves around and come up again to provide some bright colour while the main plants are still filling out.
The plants will need watering for the first year but from then on only occasionally in times of drought.
Hope you enjoy the sight of them.

NOVEMBER 2018

We have today replanted the planters with yet more temporary planting as we have been unable to buy the shrubs we want to put in before next Spring, either from local nurseries or online.

We have planted winter pansies and violas, 100 crocus, all in shades of purple and white! and a few small euonymus shrubs and a frame of black grasses all around the edge which have been grown from cuttings.

As there is no watering and hopefully no weeding needed for the winter months, perhaps the people who volunteered to look after them could keep the pansies and violas dead headed as that will increase and prolong flowering.

The planters will eventually be permanently planted, and should need little maintenance.

JULY 2018

The Planters are now insitu at the bottom of Church Way (photos shown below).

They will duly be planted up and should be sight to behold upon entering the Village. In the meantime a few flowers have been planted to give a splash of colour.

Special thanks must go to Sue Richards, Sue Wray and Mike Dodson for all their hard work, and also to Members who assisted in preparing the ground.

Mike Dodson on hand to make sure installation goes according to plan.

The Village Residents’ Association plan to put planters on the Green areas beside the Weston Favell Village signs as you enter Church Way from Bewick Road. They will be quite large and made of redwood sleepers, so should look very attractive and welcoming to the village.

Please contact us if you have any comments to make or wish for further
information about these. They will be well away from the road and won’t
obscure the view as you leave Church Way.

We naturally plan to plant them up, with perennial plants and shrubs and would
like to know if anyone, particularly those living close by, would be prepared to help with any watering necessary during the summer months, particularly in the first year.

We have a grant for the two Church Way planters, but would appreciate contributions towards the plants, and towards a third redwood planter near the top shop, which we hope to put in place towards the end of the year.
